What you need before buying a BMS controller
Before purchase, know 3 key parameters:
- EV battery model — exact brand and model (e.g., Tesla Model 3 75 kWh, BMW i3 22/33/40 kWh, VW MEB 77 kWh)
- Hybrid inverter model — e.g., GoodWe EHB 8 kW, SMA Sunny Boy Storage 6.0, Fronius Symo Hybrid
- Application — home (1-phase), commercial (3-phase), off-grid?
Step 1: Identifying your battery model
BMS-EV supports 24 EV brands. Most popular DIY choices:
| Brand | Model | Capacity | Communication | DIY Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Stellantis e-CMP | Peugeot e-208, Opel Corsa-e, Fiat 500e | 16-54 kWh | CAN bus 500k | ⭐⭐ easy |
How to identify exact battery model?
Each battery has the VIN of the source vehicle (check via OBD2 scanner or battery sticker). VIN reveals: production year, capacity, BMS firmware version, chemistry type (LFP/NMC/NCA).
Tip: Contact us before purchase — we’ll help identify the exact model from VIN.
Step 2: Choosing a hybrid inverter
A hybrid inverter combines: PV panels + battery + grid. BMS-EV is configured for 17 inverter brands:
| Brand | Best models for BMS-EV | Links |
|---|---|---|
| GoodWe | EHB, ES, EM (1-phase), EHB-HV (3-phase) | Shop GoodWe |
| SMA | Sunny Boy Storage, Sunny Tripower, Sunny Island | Shop SMA |
| Fronius | Symo Hybrid, Primo GEN24 Plus, Symo GEN24 | Shop Fronius |
| FoxESS | H1, H3, AC1, AC3, H3 Pro, H3 Smart | Shop FoxESS |
| SolaX | X1 Hybrid (1-phase), X3 Hybrid (3-phase) | Shop SolaX |
| Solis | Hybrid Series, RHI | Shop Solis |
| Growatt | SPH series | Shop Growatt |
| Sungrow | SH series | Shop Sungrow |

How to size inverter for battery?
Rule of thumb: inverter power ≥ battery capacity / 8 hours
- BMW i3 33 kWh → min 4 kW inverter
- Tesla Model 3 75 kWh → min 8-10 kW inverter
- VW MEB 77 kWh → 10 kW 3-phase inverter
Step 3: Checking compatibility
Each BMS-EV combination has unique configuration (firmware, mapping, parameters).

5 most common BMS selection mistakes
1. ❌ Buying generic BMS without CAN communication support
Cheap BMS (Daly, JK BMS) don’t communicate with hybrid inverters. Without CAN bus the inverter doesn’t know how much current to draw.
2. ❌ No HVIL (High Voltage Interlock Loop)
HVIL is automotive-grade safety. Without it: opening enclosure = no auto-disconnect = short circuit/fire risk.
3. ❌ No per-module temperature monitoring
EV battery has 8-12 modules. Each can have different temperature. Without monitoring: one module overheats → entire battery dies.
4. ❌ Firmware mismatch with vehicle BMS version
BMW i3 has 4 different BMS firmware versions (60Ah/94Ah/120Ah/120Ah Rex). Each needs different code in BMS-EV.
5. ❌ No cell balancing
Without balancing: some cells stay undercharged (3.8V), others overcharged (4.2V). After 6 months: battery drops to 50% capacity.

Dual battery configuration
BMS-EV supports 2 batteries simultaneously with 1 controller. Most common configurations:
- 2× BMW i3 (33 kWh) = 66 kWh — ideal for home with 8-10 kWp PV
- 2× BMW i3 (42 kWh) = 84 kWh — for home with 10-12 kWp or farm
- 2× Renault Zoe (52 kWh) = 104 kWh — large farm, off-grid
- 2× Nissan Leaf (62 kWh) = 124 kWh — large storage for office/farm
Benefits: Scalability, redundancy, larger capacity without new inverter.
BMS-EV Cloud monitoring
Each controller has built-in access to proprietary Cloud monitoring (optional subscription):
- 📊 Real-time data — voltage per cell, temperature per module, SOC, current
- 📱 Access from anywhere — web dashboard works in browser
- 🚨 Alarms — push notification on threshold breach
- 📈 12-month history — degradation analysis, usage optimization
- 🔧 Remote diagnostics — our technicians see your system, help remotely
FAQ
Can I use BMS-EV with battery from a different car than mine?
Yes, if same model. BMS-EV configuration is per battery model, not per vehicle. Important: production year (BMW i3 from 2014 vs 2018 has different BMS).
What if my inverter is Modbus, not CAN?
BMS-EV supports Modbus for some inverters (Solis, Growatt). Check specific model in our shop.
Does BMS-EV work with LFP batteries (e.g., BYD)?
Yes. BMS-EV supports NMC (Tesla, BMW), NCA (older Tesla), and LFP (BYD, some VW MEB).
How long does configuration take after purchase?
You receive preconfigured controller — connect cables, enable WiFi, controller loads config. Typically 30-60 minutes.
What if my exact setup isn’t in the shop?
Contact us via the website form. Within 1-3 business days we’ll prepare custom configuration — no extra charge.
